Broadway, Douglas Promenade
Date(s): c.1872
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Prior to '80? Central erected about then. Skittle Alley on the spot 1887 and perhaps a year or more later. About 1878, at latest. Castle Tap and Skittle Alley still there. Life-boat house as at time of 'Lebu' disaster, 1881. 'Spitting Club', two forms under shelter on N side, where politics and high finance were daily discussed by the ancients of the lower town and decided to their satisfaction anyhow. On the reserved platform facing the sea, Handley's band form the Bowling Green Hotel used to play, at stated hours, with vocal obligato in the popular songs of the day. 'Oh Joe, the boat is going over' was a great favourite. Several items (recorded in notes) re this platform - the Dr Oldham episode particularly - a painful recollection, and even more so at the time. The little castellated stable (which figured in one of Phillip's Drawing Books used at the Grammar School in the early eighties) - and the big house - dark in tint on the shore side of the road, are fairly clear in this print, with a magnifier. On R at this period the promenade wall ended in a right angle, shown on the large photo in the museum'.
