'Silverdale for a day's relaxation'

Date(s): mid 20th century

Creator(s): unknown

Administration / Biographical History: Silverdale was owned by the Quayle family until 1868 when it was sold to the Quine family. William Quine (an MHK at the time) proceeded to plant trees in the area and mill flour there as well. In the late 19th century, Silverdale Glen was turned into a tourist attraction for day trips from Douglas. When William Quine died in 1907, his son Thomas Quine (also an MHK) took over and restored the monks’ well along with developing the area.

By 1910, the mill had become a café, and this was when Silverdale Tea Rooms began. The mill was sold to Cecil Joseph Mitchell in 1938 and he continued to use it as a tourist attraction. In 1960 The Forestry, Mines and Lands Board bought the amusements and recreation area and in 1962 they proceeded to buy the mill and café. The bottom section of the glen was donated to The Manx National Trust in 1966.
