Creator(s): Royston, J. Walter
Scope & Content: School boy boxing matches. Boxing was a popular pastime in the Isle of Man in the 1940s. Contemporary newspapers of the time record matches taking place predominantly in Douglas in venues such as the Tromode Drill Hall and the Palais de Danse in Strand Street.
Newspapers also reveal that the proceeds from boxing matches were often donated to wartime charities, such as the Red Cross Prisoners of War Parcels Fund and the Isle of Man Prisoners of War Relatives' Association. There were also challenges between different services, such as boxing matches between Army Training Cadets and Air Force Cadets.
