First World War internees Hugo von Grundherr and Frederick Dunbar inside an internment chalet, Douglas Camp Isle of Man

Date(s): ?1916

Scope & Content: Charcoal internee portraits on the wall. The glass plate has been marked 'Mr Grundhere 4072'. This corresponds to 4072 Hugo von Grundherr (seated right) in the Douglas Camp Daybook.

Hugo von Grundherr appears in Frederick Dunbar's book 'Die Manner Insel' as 'Herr von Beyerheim'. The two shared a chalet at Douglas Camp. The portrait of Dunbar behind von Grundherr's head appears to be that which appears in the frontespiece of Dunbar's book. Dunbar (seated left) describes the chalet thus: "Our hut has acquired a homely appearance, Herr von Beyerheim has had a carpet, two upholstered wicker chairs, a paraffin lamp, a wire bed and a folding screen, sent from his home in Chichester, together with a dinner service. However, instead of a coffee percolator they had packed only a coffee grinder. The thin asbestos walls have been panelled by a Viennese carpenter with a green-painted layer of wood with skirting board. On my suggestion, the mock-up of a small fire-place was let in to one wall, with a mirror above it and an opening for the oil-lamp below." The fireplace, mirror and wicker chairs can be seen in the photo.
