House with Flemish façade, Fort St, Douglas

Date(s): 1932-1934

Creator(s): Frowde, John James

Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'Fuller view of the old house with the Flemish Façade. Mr Philip Caine ("I of M Times") came across an advertisement in an early Manx newspaper, dated 1818, referring to the sale by auction of a house in Fort St, known as 'the Frenchman's house'. Having seen many such frontages in the Bruges area, and in French Flaunders, one might hazard a guess that this may be the identified huose. It is known that many French folk found their way here at the time of the revolution of 1793'. Additional notes: '(Delaprime story, q.v. 1804 - tablet S Gallery, St George's Church)'. 'See article in large file - Grindley?': 'See N end of Fort St, the early Poor House as in 1833, 2 or 3 views'.
