The Flemish facade of the old house in Fort Street, Douglas
Date(s): n.d. [1932-1934]
Creator(s): Frowde, John James
Scope & Content: On the back of this photograph Frowde writes, 'A nearer view of the Flemish facade of the old house in Fort St. Taken specially to get detail of the top storey. If the Salisbury Hall were out of the picture, the rest of it might be anywhere in Flanders, Bruges, Ghent, or Courtroi for choice. Just as Gallimore's old shop on the Quay ( to be demolished) with its weird high-pitched roof, and the houses either side of the entrance to Bond Lane are so strongly reminiscent of the quayside of Antwerp. Visitors to Ostend - British anyhow, - used to be more in evidence round the harbour in the old quaint area than on the Plage. Douglas will soon have nothing of the quaint to offer & visitors can see bricks at home'.
