Thatched Cottages at Niarbyl, Isle of Man

Date(s): 1920s

Scope & Content: This lantern slide was taken after the first world war for the wooden bungalow on the right hand side of the photograph is a recycled alien internee camp hut from Knockaloe. The cottage nearest the camera has one of those porches made out of two huge pieces of slate as side walls with a smaller piece as a roof. The other cottage has a wooden porch but it doesn’t seem to have a roof. The building beyond is a shop. Many postcards were produced of these cottages taken from several angles, others include the ‘Florrie Ford’ wooden bungalow or even the little stone building around the coast. Niarbyl has been the location for films starting with Hitchcock’s version of Hall Caine’s 'The Manxman’. Of more recent times ‘Mysteries’ starring Sylvia Cristal and 'Waking Ned' were also filmed there.

These cottages are owned and protected by Manx National Heritage.
