Tower of Refuge, Conister Rock, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: Erected on the dangerous St Mary's or Conister Rock in 1832, the tower was designed by John Welch. It was the brainchild of Sir William Hillary, founder of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution as a means of alerting shipping arriving at Douglas at high tide to the dangerous rocks beneath the surface. The tower also provided refuge to mariners.
