North Quay, Douglas, Isle of Man
Date(s): c.1880
Scope & Content: Douglas from above the gas works. In the immediate foreground on the left is Gellings Foundry set around a quadrangle, next comes the gas works with the framework for the gas holder. On the opposite side of the harbour is North Quay. Some buildings are recognisable such as the group currently occupied by Newson Trading Company. The Saddle Hotel can be seen behind. To the left of the picture is the roadway leading in to Quine’s Corner with Riley’s building easily discerned. All the buildings to the right of the Saddle Hotel were demolished in the early 1890s as part of a six acre clearance plan by Douglas Town Commissioners. The churches from left to right are the Bethel in Circular Road, Finch HillCongregational on Bucks Road and St Mary’s. Finch Hill was built in 1868 and Rosemount (now Trinity) in 1886 but that does not show on the photograph and therefore it has to date before that.
