Bradda Head, Port Erin, Isle of Man
Date(s): c.1900
Scope & Content: Port Erin Bay, showing Bradda Head and the Milner Tower which was built in 1871 to commemorate William Milner, the safemaker of Liverpool, who did so much for the little fishing village. The people in the foreground of the picture are standing on the huge concrete blocks of the pier which was constructed to afford shelter to the bay. Work started on the pier on October 26, 1846 but during February 1868 a succession of gales resulted in £12,000 worth of damage. By 1876 the pier had been finally finished. Another great storm, during January 1884, saw the pier demolished, never to be re-built.
