Tynwald Day, St John's, Isle of Man
Date(s): c.1905
Place made: St John's
Scope & Content: This unusual view of Tynwald Day shows the fair taking place in the space between the processional route and the roadway. The tripod arrangement near to the lych gate is probably a weighing machine. A similar one was to be found at the bottom of the path leading from the Battery Pier to Douglas Head. There the owner would guess your weight before he weighed you – if he was wrong you didn’t have to pay.
