Peel Castle, Isle of Man
Date(s): 1870s
Creator(s): Cowen, George Bellett
Place made: Peel Castle
Scope & Content: A view of Peel Castle before the roadway linked St Patrick’s Isle to the mainland of Mann was taken before the restoration of the castle under the guidance of Rowand Anderson the great Scottish restoration architect, as there is a large section of wall missing near the cathedral. Notice the steps leading down to the harbour. It was to here that Cottier’s ferry first took visitors in 1863 and continued to do so for many years. On the wall close to the entrance appears to be the shadow line which was used to time the periods of duty for the guards.
