Hills House, Douglas, Isle of Man
Date(s): c.1930
Scope & Content: Hills House on Circular Road was owned by the Moore family, merchants of Douglas. It was Mr Moore who gave the site for St Georges Church to be built and it was on this estate that Athol Street was laid out in 1810. Despite their initial affluence, the Moore family fell on hard times and were forced to dispose of the 55 acres estate in the mid 19th century. A consortium bought and laid out the land between Circular Road and Athol Street in 1869/70 and, fifty years later, Douglas Corporation acquired land on which Hillside Avenue was built to serve the demand for public housing within the Borough.
