Omobono Tenni aboard Moto Guzzi (number 29), 1937 Lightweight TT (Tourist Trophy)
Date(s): 1937
Scope & Content: Italian Omobono Tenni was the first foreign rider to win a race at the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT), when he won the 1937 Lightweight race on a Motoguzzi. He was running second to Stanley Woods on the fourth lap, only 26 seconds behind. He retained this position on the next lap and on the sixth lap passed his famous team-mate (who retired shortly after) and won at a record speed of 74.72mph.
Tenni first raced in the TT in 1935, when he retired during the Lightweight race. The 1937 Lightweight race was his only victory at the TT - that same year he retired in the Senior race. At his next appearance in 1939 he was a retirement in the Lightweight and he finished ninth in the 1948 Senior TT, his last. He died later that year in a practice crash at the Swiss Grand Prix.
