General view of Port Erin, looking south

Date(s): 1890s

Place made: Port Erin

Scope & Content: Port Erin and a view down towards the beach which shows the lower end of the town before development produced shops, flats and further guest houses and a natural extension towards the upper promenade development. Note the thatched cottage in the foreground with washing laid out on the bushes. Another thatched cottage on Strand Road has a temporary shop built alongside. The two storey cottage cum shop on the downside was demolished to make way for a new shop with first floor and attic floor above but this was altered in 1908 to provide a second floor and attic. The thatched cottage and wooden shop made way for Jas S Kermode’s shop in 1906 when Joseph McArd built the new property to the designs of George and W R Kay.
