St Mary's Church, Castletown
Date(s): 1890s
Scope & Content: The church was designed by Thomas Brine and was completed in 1826. It was here that Cornelius Smelt, Lieutenant Governor was buried in front of the altar. In the photograph can be seen a double decker pulpit which was later replaced. There are cusped columns supporting the gallery. Similar pillars are to be found at Lorne House and St Mary’s Church, Bowling Green Road which was completed in Castletown three years after this church. The late Sir John Betjeman visited the church not long before it closed and described it as a fine marine church with views of the sea on one side and the town on the other. When fighting the battle to save the church from demolition John Betjeman wrote ‘the greatest protection for any building is love'
