Scope & Content: Manager of the Snaefell Mine Captain John Kewley (bearded, centre) was decorated for his bravery in leading rescue teams during the disaster.
The Snaefell Mine Disaster was one of the worst in Manx mining history. A candle left burning underground over a weekend caused a dangerous buildup of Carbon Monoxide gas. Miners beginning the early monday morning shift were overcome by fumes. Kewley repeatedly led rescue parties, in attempts to reach stricken miners in the lower levels. In all, twenty men died in the disaster.
