Douglas Bay with Castle Mona and Manx hills in the background

Date(s): mid 19th century

Creator(s): unknown

Scope & Content: Tynwald (built 1846) to left; Ben my Chree (1845) right rowing fishing boat foreground. This is probably the work of Samuel Walters of Liverpool, who made several pictures of Manx vessels from 1830 when he painted the first Mona's Isle.

“The present system of landing passengers by small boats upon the Island…the avaricious manner in which it is conducted by the boatmen is highly disgraceful to themselves and annoying to strangers...they generally succeed in levying the most exorbitant contributions." (William Bennet, Sketches of the Isle of Man, 1829, M 02608).
