A note on the rear reads 'Thomas Howard, The Duke of Norfolk of Ballavargher, Union Mills. Manx Sun 14 September 1844 - "Died- on Saturday last 7 Sept., in Duke Street, much and deservedly respected, Thomas Howard Esq., aged 72 years, many years a resident of this Island, and formerly a Lieutenant in the Oxford Militia. Mr Howard was well known in the fashionable and sporting world; and during his long residence in this Island was generally known by the cognomen of the Duke of Norfolk'.

Administration / Biographical History: Mona's Herald of 30 August 1842 states that 'Thomas Howard, known to his friends as 'The Duke of Norfolk' having at the request of his numerous friends consented to have his portrait, painted by Bowden, engraved, announced that it has been lithographed by Day and Haigh.' Copies were available at Dillon, bookseller, North Quay, and Lemon, jeweller, Duke Street.

Howard's obituary appears in the Manx Sun of 14 September 1844. He was reported as more than 70 years old and had lived on the Island more than 30 years. He was known in every town and village, by rich and poor, and although he lived as a gentleman, but no one who knew him had any idea of the means by which he supported himself. He was a great benefactor and among his achievements was securing for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Co. the contract for carrying mail.

Howard was buried at St George's Church, Douglas.
