Administration / Biographical History: Strang racecourse opened in July 1870 next to Ballamona lunatic asylum. The site was used not just for horse racing: horses were auctioned off here and on St Stephen's Day (26 December) rabbit coursing matches were held together with some athletic entertainment; trotting matches were also held here and the results and descriptions were then published in the newspapers. The racecourse was also where the Douglas Athletic Festival was held during the summer along with wrestling contests. In June 1871 a telegraph line was installed which started at Douglas Post Office.
