An Answer to a late Scurrilous Pamphlet entitled 'A Short View of the Present State of the Isle of Man' Humbly submitted to all the World by a Manks Man
Creator(s): Wilks, James
Scope & Content: A rebuttal to 'A Short View of the present state of the Isle of Man; humbly submitted to the consideration of the right honourable the Lords of His Majesty's Board of Treasury' supposedly by Charles Searle, Attorney General (See printed item F.65/16 (4) ). Reverend Wilks writes, 'I have long waited in expectation that some able advocate would rise up in the cause of justice and truth, as well as in the charitable defense of this unhappy country, against artifices of designing men, and the unrelenting malice of our enemies. It is not enough, it seems, that our trade is taken from us, and that we are deprived of our natural rights and privileges, and, by an unexampled kind of rigour, ordered to leave the pursuits of industry and content ourselves with beggary and starving, but our very vitals must be attacked, and our constitution must fall a sacrifice, with our trade, to the policy of our powerful and envious neighbours'.
