'St Patrick's Isle. Collections towards a History of Peel Castle, St German's Cathedral St Patrick's Church and Round Tower in the Parish of German, Isle of Man'

Scope & Content: Assorted resources relating to St Patrick's Isle collated by William Harrison. Comprise a printed hand coloured plan by Vacher & Sons 29 Parliament Street, 'from Mr Walker's Survey'; a map of the Isle of Man printed by G. Waterson & Son, Edinburgh; extracts from Dugdales's Monasticon Anglicanum, Orders & Duties of the soldiers in Rushen and Peel Castle, 1610 (hand copied from Manx Society volume, 1871 p166); sundry letters and charters relating to the Bishopric of Sodor and Man and Bishops of Man..

Also transcribed are extracts from histories by Blundell, Oliver, Sacheverell, Shearman, Mills, Rutter, Grose, Neale, Cumming and Wilson. A section 'Prisoners in Peel Castle' lists some of those imprisoned including the Earl of Warwick, 1397; Elenor Cobham Duchess of Gloucester, 1441; Captain Edward Christian, 1643, various Quakers, 1663, Ellinor Stockdale (Quaker), 1684 and John Robinson, 1708. The resources include a poem by E.H. de St. Pierre Jones, 1830 and 1871 newscuttings of articles by Robert J Moore (High Baliff of Peel), 'Notes on Peel Castle'. Harrison's notes on 'Dogs buried at the feet of Bishops' and the 'Dog in Bishop Simon's Grave' are accompanied by resulting correspondance. Also present is Rev J.L. Petit's article 'The Eccleesiastical Antiqities of the Isle of Man' (The Archeological Journal vol 3 pp 49-58, 1846) and a report entitled 'Scheme for an extensive reparation of the ruins of Peel castle and St German's Catherdral, Isle of Man' with additional preliminary explanatory report of the contemplated repairs by Robert Anderson of Edinburgh.
