Proceedings of the Manx Society (for publication of National Documents)

Date(s): 1858-1879

Creator(s): Moore, A.W.

Scope & Content: The volume contains letters, newscuttings and notes concerned with the running of this Society.

A note at the beginning reads, 'At a meeting of the Society held in Feb 1859 the following letter from Prof. MacLauchlan, one of the ablest scholars of the day was read with reference to the triglott Dictionary' ... "I have no hesitation in saying that if the idea of the Triglott Dictionary is carried out it will form a work of very great interest & value and its value will consist not merely in its being an important contribution to the literatute of our celtic races, but in its relation to the using of science in general bilbliography ... with respect to the sheet you sent me as a specimen it will never do as it stands; the word Erse must be expunged as most distasteful to the Scottish Guel & Gaelic or Scottish Gaelic substituted for it then the work should be submitted to the revision both of an Irish & Gaelic scholar to secure accuracy ... the Gaelic is most inaccurate in the specimen sent there being forms of words which don't exist ...'
