Scope & Content: Biographical account of the subject's early life, being the manuscript of 'Memoirs of Reverend Joseph Stowell' published in 1821, written by his brother Canon Hugh Stowell.
Administration / Biographical History: Joseph Stowell was born in 1772 in Maughold, the eighth son of fifteen born to Thomas Stowell and Ann Browne. He married Elizabeth Lamothe in 1795 at Malew - the couple had several children. Educated at Douglas Grammar school by Reverend Philip Moore, and then at Castletown Grammar School, in 1792 he became a tutor for the children of Governor Shaw. Stowell was ordained as a preacher in 1794. He opened a school in Castletown and was later appointed as head of the Grammar and Mathematical Schools in Peel until his death. Joseph died on 15 June 1801 of typhus fever.
