Administration / Biographical History: 'In the summer of the year 1779 several merchants residing in Douglas fitted out a privateer called TheTyger from that port under the command of Richard Qualtrough carrying 14 six and 2 four pounders and seventy men, twenty-five of whom were able seamen for a four month cruise, and on the twentieth day off August the said ship proceeded from Douglas Bay down St George's Channel with a fair wind and on the 23rd day of the same month fell in with the British fleet under the command of Admiral Sir Charles Hardy about twenty-five leagues S.W. of Scilly and were brought to by the Romney Captain Johnstone and ordered to make sail after him to the Admiral who was then to leeward to wait his orders and when they got within half a league of the Fleet Captain Johnstone and his second Lieutenant, purser and midshipman, on board The Tyger to see if they could prevail upon any of the crew to enter into his Majesty's service as volunteers ...'
