Reminiscences of T E Brown by his third daughter Dora Brown
Date(s): 1930
Creator(s): Brown, Dora
Scope & Content: The reminiscence begins with Dora's earliest memories at 34 College Road, Clifton, Bristol aged four. In dramatic circumstances her brother intervened, 'I have the most vivid picture at this moment of his saving my life when my pinafore caught fire, as we three little wretches stretched over the nursery guard dangling long strings into the fire my pinafore blazed up, Braddan instantly tore it off, stamped on it and hid it under the bed'. Dora mentions naming one of her doll's 'Betsy Lee', not seeing much of her father during term time, and the dedication and love her parents had for each other. Dora writes about the death of her brother Braddan (d.1876) and how she visited his grave with her mother and siblings. She writes of her mother's sister visiting the family at Clifton, Bristol and that the sisters would have 'big cooishes' (Manx conversations) in the evenings. She mentions her mother's death in July 1888 and the effect on her father - on the anniversary of her death Brown requested the family fill the home with 'bowls of roses in all the rooms'.
