Letter from Mrs Clucas of Mary Vooar to the Lord Bishop

Date(s): 12 February 1845

Creator(s): Unknown

Scope & Content: Regarding a staff which had belonged to William Crebbin quoted below:

'Mrs Clucas of Mary Vooar takes the liberty to present her compliments to the Right Reverend the Lord Bishop of this Diocese, begging his acceptance of a relic kept in memory of the late Rev Wm Crebbin who was 60 years vicar of Jurby. It is a staff which is made from a piece of an elephant's tooth which was picked up on Jurby beach. It was made of a log of Curragh Oak dug out of a bog in that parish in the year 1743, and presented to Mr Crebbin, the then vicar, and one of Bishop Wilson's Chaplains.

'Mrs Clucas, who is Mr Crebbin's grand daughter, became possessed of the staff at his death, and, on account of the Lord Bishop's Christian kindness to her grandchildren at St Mark's, she has requested her son-in-law the Revd John Thos Clarke to convey it to the Bishop, as a token of her gratitude and veneration with her best wishes for his temperal and eternal welfare. Castle Street, Douglas Febry 12th 1845'
