Letter from Ellen Stowell, Rushen Abbey to her landlord [W R Williams]

Date(s): 26 May 1852

Scope & Content: Miss Stowell runs a boarding school for young ladies at Rushen Abbey. She states that if the property is required for a public institution, she would agree to move if a reasonable level of compensation is paid. She feels that the £100 offered is far from adequate and an extra £100 would make all the difference. However, if no agreement is reached and the scheme for a Lunatic Asylum goes ahead, it would be most unsuitable for it to be sited near her school and she and her colleagues '... could have redress from you afterwards'. She encloses a sketch of the landlord's house [not on file].
