Extracts relating to the Isle of Man from the diary of Cyril I. Paton of Castletown, Isle of Man

Scope & Content: Extracts compiled by author's nephew Roderick McIver Paton February 1950 which cover the period 22 September 1906 to 2 May 1949. The diary extracts cover a wide range of subjects from family history, flora and fauna, prehistoric artefacts and sites, folklore, place names and the Manx language. There are detailed descriptions of habitats for particular plants. There are named Manx speakers and their families, some rhymes and charms are in Manx for example on page 17 there is the 'Herring Charm'. Whilst Mr Paton was seeking books for sale he gives a detailed description of the inside of Mrs Lace's cottage near Garey Ny Geayee near the end of the Lhen Trench. There are references throughout to correspondence from and meetings with the likes of Miss Morrison, Miss Douglas, Mr Kermode, Mr Cubbon and Mr T.C. Collister (great nephew of Edward Faragher, Cregneash).
Administration / Biographical History: Cyril Ingram Paton (14 April 1874-17 May 1949), a naturalist expert on all things Manx, was the son of Roderick McIver Paton (c.1833-1903), a clerk for HM Customs from Scotland and Catherine Jane née Ingram (c.1836-1918). Erstwhile president of the IOM Natural History and Antiquarian Society. He lived at 'Ormly', Arbory Road, Castletown. His father's brother was George Paton.
