Genealogical notes on the Heywood family

Scope & Content: Document on the Heywoods. Individuals mentioned include John Garrett of Ballabrooie (married Ann Christian of Milntown, he died 1699), son of John Garrett and Margaret Heywood. Other surnames mentioned are Curphey, Sutcliffe, Greenhalgh, Wattleworth, Sutcliffe, Kermode, Caley, Skillicorn, Yates, Quirk, Karran, Oates, Clucas, Wilson, Fleming, Thompson, Quayle, Hildesley, Spedding, Holt, Daley, Harrison, Joyner, Stephen, Noble, and Boardman. Mention of brass plaques rescued from the demolition of Lezayre Old Church in 1833 by the Farrant Family (8 pages, 2 sheets).

An exercise book contains notes on the Heywood Family extracted from newspapers: for example 'Major Peter Heywood was buried in ye Chancel July 27th His father the late Governor Heywood's coffin being removed from ye Chappel in Town it was interr in the the same grave with him (Malew 1699). He became Attorney General of the Isle of Man' married 'Leonora (m.1 December 1685-d.1732) da and heir of Hugh Cannell, Water Baliff of the Island by Margaret Calcott of the Nunnery, IOM (this Margaret md 2ndly Major Christian of Milntown, nr Ramsey, & died 1717). The sd Leonora marr'd 2ndly 19 August 1700 Major John Wood at The Nunnery "The Right Hon'ble Wm, Earl of Derby being present" (Malew Reg). The Calcotts were descended from Robert Calcott, receiver of Peel Castle 1504. 'The Prioress of Douglas and Robert Calcott for the freshwater fishing of Douglas as in the preceeding years, 2d"(1511). Margaret, da, & co-heir of Wm Goodman of Chester of The Nunnery at Douglas eventually became owner of the estate, but by what means she became legal owner is not known. On the dissolution of the monasteries she considered herself released from her vows, and married Robert Calcott who was comptroller of the IOM 1538' Thomas Heywood (son of Peter, see page 11) born 1698. d. 1759. A harem scarum in his younger days, got himself into the Bishops black books. On 22 July 1725 Bishop Wilson excommunicated him for refusing to comply with the censure passed on him for immorality in 1724. Heywood was then Captain'. Newscutting from 26 July 1940 'Antiquarians visit Peel, St. Peter's Church and the Clothworkers School - The charms of Peel Hill'- it mentions Phyllis Wood but seems to have no Heywood connection.
