The Kewley family of Eary or Eirey Lane, Greeba and Australia
Date(s): 1978
Creator(s): Kewley, T.H.
Scope & Content: Family tree, notes and a copy of the tithe plan.
The accompanying notes state 'The following notes supplement the information given in the attached chart relating to the Kewley family headed by Thomas Kewley of Eirey Lane, Greeba. They are mostly based on a letter received from my aunt Louisa during 1943 in response to some questions I had asked her. She was a daughter of Thomas, who settled in Waterloo.
1. Elinor Kewley d. in 1914 in Douglas. Estate of £1200. In her will she left all her possessions to her brother Thomas. However, it transpired that he died before her. As her will made no provison for such a contingency, her estate was divided between all her remaining heirs, each of whom received only £11. Thomas' eleven children pooled their legacies to provide a tombstone for him at the Waterloo cemetary.
2. My Aunt states in her letter that Thomas had four sisters, though Annie is the only one that she refers to by name, when she says that, when Annie was about to be married, Thomas sent he a gold nugget to be made into a ring and brooch. If a copy of Elinor's Will were available, this would probably resolve the question of the number of sisters Thomas had.
3. When Thomas went to Ballarat in 1853 he was accompanied by three first cousins- William (a Sea Captain), James and Thomas (a first-mate) Kewley. All were older than him. William returned to the Isle of Man, married and returned to Ballarat. They had seven children, some of whom remained in Ballarat and some moved to Western Austrailia. Thomas settled at Millbrook, near Ballarat. He married and had a son, Arthur, who later settled in Western Austrailia (I belive in Freemantle). Arthur's son, John, was living with his mother in Freemantle in 1943, having been discharged following upon an injury during World War II. Arthur had died some years earlier. James returned to the Isle of Man and married there. He had no children. (James of Eirey Lane d. 1901 in Douglas, aged 72. Buried at Peel). He left his property to his brother Thomas (the first-mate refered to above) who went to in the Isle of Man and died there. There are thus no Kewleys of this family in the Isle of Man now. However, there could be some Radcliffes. And, of course, did Thomas have two sisters or four?
The top Kewleys in the tree are Thomas Kewley of Eirey Lane Greeba who held six acres in 1867 and was married to Ann Corris. Theri children are charted as Annie who married James Radcliffe (no dates cited), Elinor who died in 1914 and the above described Thomas (1835-1913)
