Photocopies of entries submitted for 'Memories of Maughold' Heritage Year Competition and correspondence

Scope & Content: Fifteen entries for a Maughold memories competition held during Heritage Year (1986) and correspondence between one of the judges Margaret Killip and Leslie Fargher. Winning entry by Mrs Hilda Cowley (neé Lace), second Mrs Mary Sanderson, third Mrs H. Kelly. The memoirs submitted concern mainly the early 20th century of the Maughold and Ramsey area. There are numerous accounts related to the Central School, Ballaberna, open 1852-1922, the Dhoon School and the early years of Ramsey Grammar School. The Central School was locally known as the Carn School. The headmasters and teachers are named and described including details of lessons and school events. Parish events covered include the popular 'bachelors and maids tea' at Cardle Chapel, the funeral procession of Sir Hall Caine, coronation days and football derby: upper versus lower Maughold. There are descriptions of people and their occupations including their nicknames. People often mentioned: John Callow the Maughold giant being over 7 feet 4 inches in height used to be an attraction at the Palace Theatre and at The Tower, Blackpool; Kathleen Fargher the poet, Miss Josephine Kermode 'Cushag', Mrs Dawson, parish midwife and nurse. There is family history information about the Corkills of the Stafflands, Dreemskerry and Ballakilley, Moores of Crowville and Cornaa Farm. Also, information about tholtans and who lived within them and reflections on the effects of both world wars on the lives of the authors and their families. Mrs Moore's father (John Allan Corkhill 1893-1950) was in the Royal Army Medical Corps, and she gives details of his service during the First World War.
