Scope & Content: John Thomas Boyde of Sartfield, Kirk Michael: the diary of his voyage to New Zealand in 1893, where he settled as a sheep breeder. This also includes the diary of his return to the Island in 1956 with Mrs M.A. Boyde, and on his own in 1957. The diary begins 31 October 1893 leaving Douglas on board The Peveril bound for Liverpool. On arrival in Liverpool he was met by his brother Edward Boyde, Uncle Thomas and Corkhills from Cronk-y-Voddy and Tranmere, Liverpool. Stayed in Liverpool and Birkenhead until 02 November then travelled to London with Charles Corkhill to board the S.S. Ormuz in third class. By 05 November they were off Plymouth on the way via the Mediterranea and the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean via Australia (Adelaide and Melbourne). From Melbourne he boarded Rotomahana arriving in Auckland 24 December 1893 then going to New Plymouth near Taranki 25 December 1893. Next entry is for Mrs M.A. Boyde and Mr J.T. Boyde leaving Auckland by plane 30 April 1956 to Australia to board the S.S. Orantes of the Orient Line. Sail via Freemantle Western Australia where he met a Manx family related to Mrs Boyde. Mr Boyde comments on changes to Suez Canal since he last went through in 1893. They arrived at Southampton 08 June 1956, being met by a nephew from Liverpool. They returned by flight from London 10 September 1956, stopping off Amsterdam, Greenland, Vancouver, Honolulu and Fiji. Final journey recorded 12 October 1957 from Auckland to New Plymouth visiting named relatives.They departde New Zealand on RMS Rangitiki, visiting various places including Pitcairn, and sailing through the Panama Canal. He mentions letters sent to relatives 'Willie, Mary and Sylvia Ballawyllin Farm, Mrs Caine, Edith Boyde Peel'.
Administration / Biographical History: John Thomas Boyde of Sartfield and Bayrgarrow, Michael, born c.1869 (Son of John Boyde and Mary Boyde) and died 27 December 1960 Ballawillyn Farm, German; lived in Auckland , New Zealand. His brother William Charles Boyde stayed on the island.
