Research papers of Frances Wilkins on the maritime and mercantile history of the Isle of Man, in particular its connections to the transatlantic slave trade and smuggling around the Irish Sea coastal areas

Scope & Content: Contents include research for the author's book 'Manx Slave Traders' such as copies of wills of Manx slave trade captains from Lancashire Record Office, Preston and The National Archives, London and copies of Liverpool customs entries mentioning vessels bound for the Isle of Man, 1718-1719; also teaching handouts for seminars held both on and off Island with Manx subject matter, copies of display posters prepared for such seminars and a resource pack for 'Ancestral Footprints', launched May 2014.
Present also are copies of documentation and research leads for the story of the plantation inherited by a five year old Manx boy on the Mosquito Shore (present day Nicaragua), for whom George Moore acted as guardian (papers in the Quayle Bridge House Papers).
In addition there are typescript transcriptions of individual documents with smuggling-related and other maritime content found in MNH collections and off-island in repositories within Scotland and England and in private hands.
