'A comparative analysis of the use of scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy in the detailed analysis of dental microwear when reconstructing diet'

Date(s): 2000

Creator(s): Laver, Joanna

Scope & Content: This illustrated dissertation, submitted for a BSc degree in Archaeology to the University of Bournemouth, aims to critically assess two current methods of analysis of dental microwear when reconstructing past diets. The methods of scanning electron microscopy and optical microscopy were undertaken at Bournemouth University and were used to analyse the occlusal surface of a collection of teeth excavated at Balladoole in 1944. The writer concludes that optical microscopy provides a relatively cheap and simple method of analysis with prospects for development in the future. Archaeology studies.
