Papers of the Taubman, Goldie and Goldie-Taubman family of the Bowling Green, Castletown and the Nunnery, Braddan

Scope & Content: Papers of successive generations starting with the parents of John Taubman (d 1799) but beginning in depth with this John Taubman SHK, a politician, merchant and advocate, residing at the Bowling Green, Castletown; thereafter including his son Major John Taubman (1746-1822) of the Nunnery, Braddan, General Alexander Goldie, Sir John Senhouse Goldie-Taubman, J. Leigh Goldie Taubman and relatives such as Captain Charles Francis Goldie Taubman (d. 1898), Captain Gerald Goldie Taubman (d. 1915) and Captain Ernest Harcourt Taubman.

Private (family), legal, business and property management matters are well represented as is paperwork generated on behalf of those designated executors of the estate of deceased relatives. Legal documentation includes wills, marriage settlements, conveyances, copy leases, papers relating to family testamentary law suits, copies of court actions relating to land etc. Administrations of relatives who died intestate include Captain Charles Francis Goldie-Taubman who died in West Africa in 1898.

Extensive business and family correspondence survives for the second half of the eighteenth century documenting John Taubman Senior's work as advocate and merchant (business contacts write from several overseas countries as well as on island); also his financial daybooks, ledgers and loose-leaf accounts relating to his red herring houses, various voyages of his vessels and other business interests. Taubman’s papers relating to business in the House of Keys are present including the text of a speech in the Keys and printed pamphlets; also some of his correspondence to the Duke of Atholl on the question of his rights.

Major Taubman's correspondence is notable for business correspondence with George Quayle of Isle of Man Bank and correspondence with Marcus Somerville (friend), John Christian (nephew/cousin?) and Mark Wilkes regarding his marriage to Dorothy, daughter of Major Taubman. His papers include business accounts prepared for him by Carrick and Brown and Joseph Christian as well as Scots Fusilier Guards records of the 1840s such as a roll of the age and size of his company and a list of sergeants by seniority at 1842.

Correspondence for later generations includes copious letters from Mary Ann Taubman to her sister Isabella, 1800-1803, papers of Lady Amelia Goldie Taubman and matters of regimental and general business to General Alex Goldie.

Journals of family members include Isabella Christian Taubman who married Lt Col Alex Jno Goldie, February 1804

Nunnery estate rentals, 18th onward and rentals for the Bowling Green, Castletown &c 1816 onward, Loughmollow, Cronkrough and Barroole etc, 1826-1830

Household accounts, inventories and vouchers relating to upkeep of the Nunnery and Nunnery estate together with accounts of (named) labourers employed, for instance a daybook spanning 1801-1804

Scrapbooks, genealogical material (newspapers cuttings, obituaries etc)

Niger Company Ltd papers of Leigh Goldie Taubman, a Director in said company including a typescript overview of the company, 1879-1951 (1 box)
