Administration / Biographical History: Peter Stanley Gelling read Classics at Cambridge, took a post graduate course in Near Eastern languages and in the early 1950s joined the Department of Ancient History and Archaeology at Birmingham University, becoming Reader in 1972. Gelling died suddenly on 9 March 1983 at the age of 57.
