First World War Internees (German Navy) in front of the Wire, Douglas Camp, Isle of Man
Date(s): ?1915
Scope & Content: Placard reads, 'Kriegsgefangene, Douglas, Isle of Man 1914-19-?' with three legs and a Manx cat. One man holds a ship model. Six of the men wear Kriegsmarine Imperial German Navy tops (one has the crosed flags badge of a signaller) so they are probably part of the crew of a German battleship sunk at the Battle of the Falkland Islands in 1914. In the absence of any miltary POW camp network at this time these men were sent to civilian camps on the Isle of Man.
There is apparently a prisoner number on the glass plate - 1573 - which corresponds to Willy Hareniza in the Douglas Camp daybook. He would appear to be identical with Willy Haremza on the ICRC database, Red Cross bureau number 2057. Home address shown as Posen ( Poznan )
