First World War internee Wilhelm Karten, Douglas Camp Isle of Man

Date(s): ?1917

Scope & Content: The name Karten is marked on the glass plate, and the identification of Wilhelm Karten is based on comparison with other images in the series.

This man wears puttees around his legs below the knee. This item of clothing was adopted by the British army in India in the 19th century but had spread to most armies by the time of the First World War. It may suggest this man has a military background.

The photo was taken in the studio of the artist Schmidt. The subject also appears in PG/7870/38059, with Schmidt. In this image, a blanket has been hung up to provide a backdrop but some of Schmidt's artwork can be seen on the right. The subject is possibly the man depicted in PG/7870/38067/2.
