Scope & Content: The walls of the hut are decoated with what appear to be ribbons from a funeral wreath, reading 'Unsern lieber kamarade Oskar Ehlers zur erinnerung Cpd 6 Heimat'. Possibly a tribute to a hutmate about to return home. A portrait of Kaiser Wilhelm II is also visible. One of the men wears what appears to be a uniform
The glass plate is marked with the name Aswendt and prisoner number 20094 - comparison with the hospital lists on the ICRC website identifies one of the men in this group as Carl Anton Adolf Aswendt who first appears on an internment list at Queensferry Camp, Cheshire. He is recorded as a reservist, with home address: Berlin, Petterkofferstr.9. A record of his birth 7 June 1888 is available on www.ancestry.co.uk as is his marriage on 20 December 1919. He appears in a 1928 Berlin telephone dirctory shown as kaufman (businessman) and this is also the profession on his death certificate 26 May 1948 in Hesse.
In addition, a print of the image is held within the J.T.Baily papers in MNH archive. The reverse of that print is dated 29 May 1917 and has been signed by all five persons present: 20094 C.A.Aswendt, 19947 Oskar Ehlers, 19950 [illegible], 19941 F.Volkmann, 20145 [illegible]. 19947 Oskar Ehlers appears in a Red Cross hospital list at Knockaloe in January 1917 hospitalised with Febricula. He first appears on a Gibraltar list 23/2/1915, recorded as Offizier-Aspirant, Inf-Reg 75 Reserve, home address: Bremen, Seilwall 16.
