Scope & Content: Illustrated dissertation submitted to the University of Liverpool for the degree of Master of Arts in Manx Studies under the direction of the Centre for Manx Studies, Douglas. The dissertation examines the traditional calendar custom of Beltane (May Day) on the Isle of Man. Examining the customs associated with this time of year in the past and present. The dissertation identifies the key features and their symbolism within Manx literature sources of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. there is a cross cultural comparison of the key features with other spring festivals in the northern hemisphere. An examination into the functions of festivals and rituals, revival of culture, symbolism of doorways and an ethnographic study of interviews and field work as part of the study and the an interpretation of the emerging themes. part 1: Manx literary sources; cross cultural comparisons of spring festivals; mock battle between summer and winter. Part 2: Sulby Beltane festival, Cregneash Old May Day events, ethnography-interviews and summary of interviews. Part 3: Overview and summary of research.
