Scope & Content: John Tom Kaighin talks in Manx to J.W. Radcliffe of Ramsey. He talks about ploughing; turnips ('turnipyn'); preparation of land with gorse; time taken to travel to Ramsey; reaping and stacking of corn and not ripening in dry year. He recalls going to school; understanding Manx better than English; his grandfather teaching him Manx; meeting Jonny Kaighin on his way to the mountain with his sheep; Manx and English names for places. He jokes about the etymology for Killabreaga being 'Kill the Liars'.
He talks about grazing animals on the hills; two brothers Southwards who kept a mill; parson Qualtrough and the pig; children in Bride smoking-out the school by putting gorse in the chimney; John Colum who broke the church bell at Bride; lack of money; children going to school barefoot with shoes for Sunday.
