Scope & Content: Manx Folk Life Survey sound recording of William Clucas, aged 72, with B.R.S. Megaw about sailmaking in Port St Mary. William talks about types of lamp used in his father’s sail loft; when his father started the sail loft and the number of people who worked there during the seasons; how some sail makers went to sea; his time working on schooners including as Master on the ‘Margaret Garton’ as well as working in his father’s sail loft; the years following his father’s death when he and his brother took over the sail loft; the demise of the sailmaking industry.
He also talks about Ned Maddrell, who sailed the schooner ‘Enigma’. He then discusses how he went back to sea; working as a sailmaker for the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company; sailmaker Ned Cubbon who kept the sail loft; other sailmakers; how cotton canvas for sailmaking came from 'across'; and the working hours of the sailmakers.
