Scope & Content: Interview with Andy Joughin by Charles Clarke about his life, folklore and meeting a Trafalgar veteran. Andy starts by talking about how in 1881 he was taken as a child by his parents to meet Charlie Joughin from Peel who was a veteran of the Battle of Trafalgar (1805) onboard HMS 'Victory'; Charlie died shortly afterwards and was buried in Peel cemetery; Andy talks about leaving Jurby school aged 12 to become a blacksmith; the first agricultural binder coming to the Isle of Man; scythes; machine made in Kirk Bride displayed at the cattle show in Ramsey by John Ferguson; big 'yawls' (fishing boats) from Scotland and the old laws about 'Scotchmen' in the Isle of Man; how his ancestors came to the Isle of Man with King Orry and the Christians of Milntown; owing 11 acres in Andreas given to his ancestors by King Orry; stories about the Buggane and stories about men, including Dan, a relative of the Dorans who had a shop in Strand Street, who used to wear a big sou'wester, even on the hottest day, and would beg; and he ends by recalling how his mother could only count in Manx Gaelic and how he knew lots of Manx speakers as well as Johnny Kneen the blacksmith, his father Jackie, and other people including John Teare and Henry Corlett.
