Scope & Content: Abigail Faragher talks to Walter Clarke about her childhood and life on farms including Ballayack, Billown, Ballacomish and Earystane. She talks about her schooldays at Ballabeg and Dalby; headmaster Mr Corris, teachers Mrs Corris and Jimmy Corkish; pupils Jimmy Lowey, Norah and Basil Dobson, the Quane girls from Ballagawne, Maggie Gawne and Harry Kinrade; teacher Mr Callister in Dalby who taught them numbers in Manx Gaelic; school year determined by the farming calendar; working on the farm from when she was a child; field names around Ballayack and Earystane; working with horses; harvest; feeding animals in winter, including gorse; cheese making, including from sheep’s milk; preparing chickens, geese and turkeys for Christmas; slaughter of animals; salt meat for winter; jam making; potato bread. She explains that her family had a stall at Douglas market; using the train; other farming families who sold there; use of charms and Mrs Dobson; social events in Dalby; Earystane chapel.
