Scope & Content: Mrs Abigail Faragher talks to Walter Clarke about her schooldays and her experiences working on her family’s various farms in the South of the island (Ballayack, Dalby, Billown, Ballacomish, Earystane). She relates memories of chapel, food, children’s pastimes and clothes; Ballabeg school, the pupils and teachers including Jimmy Corkish, Mrs Moore, Mr & Mrs Corris (from Douglas); pupils. She talks about her life in Earystane house and its history within her family; occupations of various family members including her grandfather who was a smithy, her father a cooper and her uncle, a smithy; her father’s farm rented from Ballacannell and Ballyack; the death of her uncle; living in Dalby from 1919; her time at Dalby school, the pupils and teachers including Cecil Collister from Peel; moving to Billown, then Ballacomish and Earystane; blackberry picking and various foods and Mr Cubbon at Colby mill; local smithy; dairy work; chapel life and Ronague Sunday school and Earystane chapel; lists Manx Gaelic names for the surrounding fields and stories connected to names; shoes; children’s games and chores including turnip picking and time off school for harvest and other holidays; going to and from school in the dark, house lit with an oil lamp; doing her own baking; how she spent all her life on farms, hard life left school at 14 from Dalby then worked on farm; farm work in Billown and Ballacomish; working with horses.
