Scope & Content: Lewis Karran, aged 84, talks to Abigail Faragher and Walter Clarke about his childhood and farming. He recalls life from 1901, his school and teachers; how he moved from The Quallagh, Ronague Reservoir to Port Erin; Arbory school; working aged 14 as a farmer’s boy at Ballakilpheric then Dobson’s at Eairystane; Becks at Ballaoats; wages; Teddy Thomson, Onchan builders and how he helped to build houses in Castletown, Laxey, Ramsey, Douglas; when working on farms he worked mostly with horses and ploughs; work on the coal boats in Port Erin and Port St Mary, Castletown, Laxey and Peel; recalls the loss of the 'J.B. Kee' in the Mersey; working four seasons on the mills for Jimmy Qualtrough; how he worked for T.G. Moore’s Estate as a foreman; hunting rabbits; how he has never been off the Isle of Man; hunting with dogs and ferrets; life at Ballamodha; net maker Jim Coole from Colby; playing the concertina and mouth organ, ending with a tune on the mouth organ.
