Scope & Content: Track 1: Janet Gibb of the Grove, Ramsey talks to John Stowell Kenyon about her life. Janet talks about T.E. Brown; Kelly family relations; where her family are buried in Kirk Rushen; shops, houses and roads in Ramsey; building of the Queen’s hotel; and shipyard workers in Ramsey. She recalls the Grove getting running water just before the First World War with a bath added in 1921. She talks about the Turnbulls (her mother's family) and her grandfather and his shop in Port Erin. Janet recalls the story of her rough crossing on the Isle of Man Steam Packet boat the 'Fenella' from Glasgow to the Isle of Man on 11 December 1911 shortly after the 'Ellan Vannin' disaster which she also recalls.
Track 2: Janet recalls knowing P.M.C. Kermode and Josephine ‘Cushag’ Kermode with mention of Cushag’s book and the Kermode family. She talks about the first Isle of Man Tourist Trophy (TT) races with motorcars in 1904 and the motorcycle races starting in 1907. Janet recalls her memories of the First World War including where she was when war was declared; the gift of a basket made by an internee at Knockaloe; no men left in Ramsey; Chilwell (Nottingham) shell filling factory and its working conditions where her sister Alice worked. She tells a story about staying with family in Scotland. She ends by talking about Archdeacon John Kewley; the horse mill at the Grove and machine used for separating chaff from grain; crops grown at the Grove; and how her grandfather came to the Isle of Man and installed the mill.
Administration / Biographical History: Janet Anne Gibb was donor of The Grove, Ramsey (1878-1974). John Stowell Kenyon was a businessman and local antiquarian (1908-1998).
