Notes on information contributed by Mr Kneale of Cooil Dhoo, Jurby, interviewed by Margaret Killip

Date(s): June 1965

Scope & Content: Mr Kneale's farm Cooil Dhoo is located on the boundary between Jurby and Andreas and has been in the family for a long time. A tumulus is marked on one of the fields where flints have been found and given to the Museum. Mr Kneale recalled that John Lace of Ballachristory, Andreas had the ability to cure by charming and gave some examples. The people of Rhendhoo, the Wade's were great believers in herbs, charms and in the fairies. There used to be a marl pit in the Glebe Field and Mr Kneale recalled seeing ploughing with a one way plough. His father threshed with flails and winnowed with the dollan. Several men had yawls at the Lhen and at Rue Point and also used to set shore lines. They used mollags as marker buoys. Sunny croft was the name of a small croft on the road to Jurby East and Willie Corlett the postman used to live there. The house was thatched but has gone now but the buildings remain. There were mud houses on Ballachrink where Mr Kneale used to live and the walls were so hard that they had to be broken down with picks and shovels when falling the houses.
