Scope & Content: Leslie Quirk, speaking in Manx, tells stories and memories of things he heard during his many years of learning Manx Gaelic. He talks about his grandfather John Quirk the guide and a man from Dingle who had a ships’ chandlers shop; the Manx fishing industry; how his grandfather often went to Dingle; meeting a man in Dingle who he thought was his grandfather; John Hall, nicknamed Juan y Howe; a trip around southern Ireland; a story told to him by John Kneen, the Gaaue; his early life in Peel and how he learned Manx; how in 1916 the family went to live in Seaforth; summer holidays in the Isle of Man staying with the grandmother; how in 1920 he heard old men speaking Manx at Weatherglass corner; falling in the harbour near the station.
He gives some examples of phrases that his grandmother used and then he talks about 1931-1943 and how he left King William’s College and worked on land at Ballawattleworth with his brother and sister; starting to learn Manx at classes held by Caesar Cashen in the old Harbour Master’s Office reading from the Bible and from Mr Cowley’s ‘red’ book; differences in pronunciation and how he was told by a linguist to copy Caesar’s pronunciation; Caesar Cashen; planting barley in the fields and a storm coming in; pub in Niarbyl; visits to Eairy Cushlin in Caesar’s van; herb growing at the Raggatt; Peggy who lived in Patrick; Gordon and the correct pronunciation for it; Raby’s; cafe belonging to Leslie Karran; the potter’s house; Eairy Cushlin and Lhag ny Killey; letter from a linguist who was making comparisons between Manx, Scots and Irish; new book ‘Celtic’ written by D.B. Gregor; the Manx government, Manx identity and culture; Welsh woman's experience of Welsh language; story about the Calf of Man, mentioning Ffinlo Karran and his family and his father; story about a supernatural cow; journey from Peel to Port Erin by boat; William Fargher; and he continues to talk about where they are going and what they can see until the end of the tape.
